As a reminder, all Skillshare teachers are paid monthly based on site and class activity:
Every month, 30% of Skillshare’s Premium Membership revenue goes into a royalty pool for teachers. The remaining revenue goes towards the operation of the Skillshare platform and our marketing efforts, which work to bring more members to Skillshare. Teachers are then paid through the royalty pool based on their share of the minutes-watched by Premium members. For example, a teacher who received 5% of all minutes-watched would earn 5% of the royalty pool.
January is usually a strong month for growth at Skillshare, with learning as a top New Year’s Resolution:
Every year in January, we tend to see a growth in new members on the platform as people set New Year’s Resolutions and aspire to reclaim or discover new creative habits and hobbies. As a result, teachers may see an accompanying increase in the amount of minutes-watched in their classes during this time.
This year, any growth in new members should be reflected in the royalty pool sooner than in previous years due to our shortened free trial length:
In previous years, because free trials could be as long as 2 months, Skillshare’s revenue — and the size of the royalty pool — didn’t grow proportionately until March and April when new members from January became paying Skillshare members. However, in October 2020, we changed the free trial offer available through teacher referrals and other promotions from two months to two weeks. Other free trials available through the site were shortened to one week. Thanks to these shorter free trials, any growth we see in January will be reflected in the royalty pool and teachers’ earnings much sooner than in previous years.
