Introducing Skillshare TV: Launching a FAST Channel for Skillshare Classes (September 2024)

We are thrilled to introduce Skillshare TV (SKTV), Skillshare's very own Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) channel! This new venture marks a significant expansion in how we deliver educational content, allowing viewers to access a curated selection of Skillshare classes directly through their TV or streaming device.

In this announcement:

What is a FAST channel, and how do I access it?

SKTV is a FAST channel, which offers free video content to viewers supported by ads. FAST channels are only accessible through enabled smart TVs — it’s not something that streams online. We expect that the Skillshare TV (SKTV) FAST channel will launch by the end of September via LG Channels, and it will be available in North America. The goal is to eventually have SKTV be accessible on other popular streaming platforms and devices, providing viewers with an expanded learning experience at no additional cost to them.

What content will be broadcast on SKTV?

The programming for SKTV will be dynamically updated by our Curation and Content teams on an ongoing basis. Should your class be selected for inclusion, you will see an adjustment on the Earnings Breakdown of your Teacher Stats dashboard once the payment has been processed.

Our goal is to continuously gather insights on viewer engagement and preferences to optimize our content offerings and scheduling.

How does this affect my revenue?

Currently, Skillshare plans to distribute to participating teachers thirty percent (30%) of the aggregate net revenue that we receive from any of our FAST channel partners. We will allocate the amount of revenue each participating teacher receives based on how many of that teacher’s classes are included in the monthly curated catalog for each of the different partners. We will notify participating teachers in advance of any changes to the revenue structure in the future.

If you are selected to be a participating teacher and your class is included in a given month’s curated catalog, you will receive compensation based on the ad revenue generated by the channel during that month.

Example:

Three teachers are selected for one of the opportunities, and the September catalog is made up of 4 classes. Two of the three teachers have a single class included in the September catalog, while the remaining teacher has two.

If Skillshare were to receive a total of $1,000 from the partner, thirty percent ($300) of that net revenue would be split up and paid out amongst the participating teachers as follows:

  • Teacher #1 (one class) = $75
  • Teacher #2 (one class) = $75
  • Teacher #3 (two classes) = $150

How can I expect to receive payment if one or more of my classes is selected?

We anticipate providing teachers with quarterly payments for their participation in SKTV. The amount that you are entitled to is based on the revenue share formula described above, and will be added onto your teacher payment on the following payout month.

Example:

Skillshare receives payment from a channel partner in April, covering January through March. The shares for participating teachers for this period are calculated and paid out as part of the May payout.

What if I want to opt-out of having my classes included as part of content licensing opportunities, including for Skillshare TV?

Right now, we are handling all the preparations and logistics for adding classes on Skillshare TV. If you wish to opt-out of your classes being included in ongoing Skillshare TV programming, please send an email to teach@skillshare.com with the classes you wish to exclude by September 20th.

Keep in mind the following:

  • Programming will change on a monthly basis, and there is no guarantee that your content will be included, or month over month.
  • If you opt-out, it will take 45 business days for our partner to remove content that is included in programming.

Thank you for your continued dedication to sharing your expertise with the Skillshare community and now, through Skillshare TV, with an even wider audience. Should you have any questions or need further information, please don't hesitate to email us at teach@skillshare.com.
